When trying to solve a problem, it is better to deal with one point at a time. This way the other person can give a response with greater detail, without having to focus on many points at once and without having to move on to another point. It is common for those in an argument to through everything at the other person including the kitchen sink. In psychology this may be referred to as kitchen sinking[1]. This is a bad arguing technique because it can create confusion, can be a red herring and can lead to stonewalling from the other person.
To increase the likelihood of resolving the problem, attempt to address one point a time. Allow time for the other person to respond and try to understand what the other person is saying before responding. To show that you have understood what the other is saying try to paraphrase their sentence back to them. If they agree that you understood then you can attempt to reply back.
The initial point made and all responses should be kept short. If the other person cannot successfully paraphrase what you said then it could be that you have said too much or that you were not clear enough. Do not blame them for the inability to paraphrase. Instead try to clarify what you meant.
An easy way to practice using this social tool is to grab a house hold object and make it a symbol of silence. Whoever holds the item cannot speak. You should not give the silence object, but you should ask for it when you feel you have said enough.
